While a conventional home rental of one-month for a foot pump could exceed $2,000.00, medcomdirect's program is capped at $675.00 for a one-month's rental of a foot pump.  While some sports-injury home foot pump use requires only a few weeks of use in the home, having the one month rental period allows for us to ship the foot pump to a patient PRIOR to their surgery.  This allows the patient to be oriented on the equipment, their caregiver to become familiar with the equipment and an overall feeling of comfort with their rehabilitation equipment.  The patient is able to call us, review their set-up information, all while NOT on mind numbing drugs.  They may have an injury, but because they are prior to surgery, they are not on heavy pain narcotics, and can clearly understand the directions for use of the equipment.

The Foot pumps that medcomdirect supplies are simple to use.  They consist of a controller connected by an air supply hose to a specially designed inflation pad.  The inflation pad is rapidly inflated by the controller and gently squeezes the sole of the foot to mimic the circulatory effects of walking.  We provide simple and concise instructions as well as 24-hour telephone support for your patients' needs.

Clinical studies report a plexus of veins in the foot acts as a powerful venous pump in the weight bearing phase of normal movement (ambulation). As each step is taken, the application of weight to the bottom of the foot results in longitudinal flattening and stretching of the plantar arch, causing the venous plantar plexus to collapse and empty. This sends a column of blood to the right atrium of the heart, allowing the plexus to refill.

The ejection of blood is so powerful that it is able to overcome a calf cuff inflated to 100mmHg and send a column of blood back to the heart! But when patients are immobile, this circulatory action ends.

AVI Women in bed with 6060.tif (161758 bytes) Foot pumps are designed to mimic the natural effects of walking on blood circulation in the feet and legs.  For patients who are immobile, foot pumps increase circulation in the lower extremities.  This in turn can prevent many circulatory diseases that are common to non-mobile patients, and it can also reduce pain and swelling.
